Byker Grove was gritty, but worse than the under-age sex, drug-taking and general malaise of a rough Northern sitcom was when PJ, the hero of the saga, took one for the team against Denton Burn. I cannot remember how many times I have heard people recall the words -”Duncan, man, I’m blind!”
Somehow, this was supposed to be a moral tale of the woes of war -foretold by the Christian lass at The Grove. I like the way that no-one calls an ambulance until told to by Geoff (those sideburns deserve a eulogoy all of their own). Spot the sneakers and curtain hair-styles in this clip.

People still bring this up, around 15 years on. It has certainly stuck in British memories for the generation born in the 1980s.
