Shag Bands - do they have meanings?
Shag bands came in the form of jelly bracelets or nylon strips in varying colours. They were the must-have accessory of any 90′s child. They were cheap, they formed a currency in the playground and you could fit around 50 on one arm if you tried. Everyone wore them at school. Those daring enough would wear loads and get told off by the teachers.
A precursor to the Lance Armstrong wrist bands, shag bands were definitely down with the kids. Mystical meaning was attached to the number and colour of bands one had.
One legend among many was that they equated to the numbers of friends or partners one had. Another scare-story among American parents is that the bands are used to advertise the sexual history of an individual. However, they mean different things in each school depending on the gossip mill.
A recent development in the history of the shag band is the charity band and the religion band. A piece of red string is worn by adherents of Madonna’s mystic Jewish religion, Kabbala, and thicker rubber bands are worn by those supporting various charities.
