Teletext - the joy of waiting for the next page!

Its time for a very British TV focussed post here in Popular Nostalgia – its Teletext!

We all remember reading Teletext for news, sport reports and even, once Fastext (oh what an advancement in technology that was – like the internet, only with four “choices”!) was invented, quizzes, like Bamboozle.

If the internet is the information super-highway, Teletext was a single track country lane with no white lines and few passing places. But enough of the road-way analogies, don’t we all hanker for a simpler time when pages would spin just that little bit faster than you could read them and you had to wait for them to “come back around”, or you would press “hold” only to discover that the article you were reading went over the page and, when you “unheld” it would be 15 minutes away!

Teletext was a simpler thing, indeed, and featured much less child unfriendly information (except copious amounts of gambling related content, of course) than the internet so, like so much in this world, seems a more innocent medium than the harsh realities we face in modern life.

Anyone remember Teletext page numbers? Leave a comment below, for no reason at all…
