The X-FILES LOGOThe X Files were, and still are, great. It was the ultimate treat to be allowed to stay up late enough to watch it. Thousands of conspiracy theorists were inspired and galvanised by the FBI cover-up sub-plot. Each episode, however, was a crush fest for young teenagers. David Duchovny became a pin-up off the back of the television series and red head Gillian Anderson was all over the magazines – her trademark bob and his curtain hairstyle both hallmarks of nineties fashion.

The episodes themselves were really scary, especially because of the award-winning creepy starting sequence. A couple of spin-off films were really successful – including one in 2008 with a surprise part for Billy Connolly. My enduring memory of the is “Tombs” – the guy who could stretch himself and had to eat people’s brains to survive because of pituitary failure. Aside from the stories themselves, huge merchandising campaigns raged through schools. cards became currency in the playground and t-shirts saying “the truth is out there” were unbelievably cool for a while.

Agents Scully and Mulder also featured in a song by Welsh band, Catatonia, which went: “Things are getting strange, I’m starting to worry. This could be a case for Mulder and Scully”
