I used to live about 300 metres from a Safeway’s store and most of the teenage population of my town worked there. In addition to picking up the groceries I could obtain the entire month’s gossip in the time it took to scan the bread and vegetables.

However, when Morrisons took over, not only did they mix up the Morrisons and Safeway labels for a couple of months, they then offloaded the real estate to Waitrose who filled the shelves with useless luxuries and tripled the prices. This forced my neighbours to trail to far less popular climes and turned a large local shop into a true supermarket.

I’ll never forget hanging around the car park to watch the lads jump over the trolleys on rollerblades and skateboards then being asked to move on. Heady days.
