Blur Versus Oasis

The Blur versus Oasis battle came to a head in August 1995 when both of their singles vied for number one on in the same week. Class war broke out in Britain with many a reference to “Southern Puffs”, “Northern Monkeys” and the like. However, a subtle battle of definition broke out between young teenagers. Were you for Blur or Oasis? Who did the girls fancy more? Damon Albarn or the Gallagher brothers?
I was decidedly put out when a good friend of mine decided that her loyalties lay with Damon Albarn. Good looking though he was, I always found him to be simpering and far too cockney. The Gallghers were far rougher around the edges and much more down to earth. Bad boys that would add spice to the fight. Oasis also embodied a kind of Northern nationalism that has always existed but was much more raw in the nineties due to the disillusionment and unemployment that followed the pit closures.
Although “Roll With It” was quite a boring track, I inifinitely preferred it to the hypnotic oompah of “Country House”. Though I didn’t know it at the time, Damien Hirst directed their music video. I now like it even less.
As it was, Blur won the battle but not the war. Oasis continued to produce music together whilst Damon Albarn found his musical epitome with the Gorillaz.
Check out Damon Albarn saying “I’m harder” in the video above.
