challenger explosionI was in the second grade. I remember entering the cafeteria for lunch, and being excited that they were serving tater tots. In back of the cafeteria near the stage, Mrs. Alfano the Speech teach er, Donnie the janitor, and Principal Manley were guddled around the tv. Mrs. Alfano shook her head, and wore a forlorn expression. There was a rocket ship on the screen, a video of people in blue space suits., My eight year old mind couldn’t register it. When we returned to class, my teacher Mrs. Smith explained what happened. She took it awfully hard. She wore a black armband for weeks in honor of Krista MacAuliffe. The crepy part was a few days later, we received our Weekly Reader late that month. The top story was that the astronauts, and a schoolteacher were about to fly up into space aboard a rocket ship called the Challenger. I remember being creeped put by it, but the child in me burst into laughter when my classmate Jason drew a beard on both poor Krista, and Judith Resnick’s faces. It was on the news for weeks after that. I also remember that during that week I heard about a new singer named Madonna.
