Growing up in the North of England, it was great to read a book aimed at children from that part of the World.

Kingdom by the Sea, by Robert Westall, is one such book that I remember fondly from my childhood.

Written all about a boy who’s house is hit by a bomb in WWII, the story follows the lad and his dog, as they embark on a trip to live by the sea in war-time Northumberland.

There’s some heart rending moments, and high drama, too, in this book.

Read it to your own children!
