Everyone was singing it -on school buses, in pubs and around town. England, normally too scared to hope, was allowing herself to get all excited about the 1996 European Championships. England flags were all over: on cars, buildings and boats. Girls made red and white tops and the boys wore England shirts. Everybody gathered round to watch. The song itself became quite annoying after a while as no-one would stop singing it and it eventually went on to be used for every major soccer event, the return of Concorde and anything that could be said to have ever come home.
