The biggest selling track of Brenda Lee’s career is “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree”. In 1958, when she was 13, Owen Bradley asked Lee to record a new song written by Johnny Marks, who wrote “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” (Gene Autry) and “A Holly, Jolly Christmas” (Burl Ives). Lee recorded the song, in July with a prominent twanging guitar part by Hank Garland. It didn’t do well upon release or re-release but became a popular Christmas track over the years.

Rockin Around the Christmas Tree – Brenda Lee

Rockin’ around the Christmas tree
at the Christmas party hop.
Mistletoe hung where you can see
ev’ry couple tries to stop.

Rockin’ around the Christmas tree,
let the Christmas spirit ring.
Latter we’ll have some pumpkin pie
and we’ll do some caroling.

You will get a sentimental feeling
when you hear voices singing
“Let’s be jolly,
Deck the halls with boughs of holly.”

Rockin’ around the Christmas Tree.
Have a happy holiday.
Ev’ryone dancing merrily
in the new old fashioned way.

  1. Lots of fun. Thanks. I grew up literally in Brenda’s young world where she sang local radio gingles. She was sweet and talented in 1955 as she is now in 2008. Here’s to Little Miss Dynomite.
