An item of big time nostalgic value: that milk advert.

“Milk, yeurgh!”

Advertising milk to children must be the stuff of nightmares for any marketer, but somehow those who produced this classic early 90s TV ad hit the mark so well that they entered an entire generation’s psyche.

The Advert on Video

Just watching it again takes me right back to my youth. That advert has probably influenced me more than any other. It didn’t make me drink milk though.

I remember repeating the classic lines “Accrington Stanley, who are they?” and even still do today, whenever I hear the club mentioned. Those who support them must be sick and tired of it – I even heard Gary Lineker and his fellow commentators on the BBC doing terrible impressions in their FA Cup coverage a few years ago.

The easiest way to gauge just how much impact this advert had is the fact that anyone, over the age of 20, who hears the words “Accrington Stanley, who are they?” will answer with “exactly.”

Perhaps the strangest thing about this classic combination of football, Scouse children and milk is that the advert – both in retrospect and at the time – made no sense at all. Exactly.

  1. I’ve just read an article from 2006 in which the main kid from the advert, Carl Rice, was invited to attend a home game of Accrington Stanley to celebrate their hope of returning to the league. He’s now a comedian and writer, but told BBC Lancashire that Tottenham Hotspur refused to be named in the advertisement and so the National Dairy Council had to choose another team.
