I bought some red spray-on hair mascara when I was about ten years old. My next-door neighbour and I sprayed a smily face on my little brother’s head and proceeded to spray what we thought were very alluring, Geri Halliwell-style red streaks in our hair.
The dye duly came off on our pillows that very night.
The next stage was dyeing our hair with actual dye. Various disasters came into school during that fad, including green hair, blue hair, red dye on the face, red dye on the scalp. Exasperated teachers tried to enforce discipline only to be met with deadpan expressions and explanations of “it’s my natural colour, Miss.”
The myriad of hair mascara was to be matched only by the new fashion in brightly coloured eye mascara and eye jewellry.
